Asbestos Awareness Training
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a range of building materials to make them more rigid and fire resistant.
Although it is now illegal to use asbestos in the construction or refurbishment of any premises, many thousands of tonnes of it were used in the past and much of it is still in place. As long as the asbestos is in good condition and is not being or going to be disturbed or damaged there is no risk. But if it is disturbed or damaged, it can become a danger to health, because asbestos fibres are released into the air and people can breathe them in.
Anyone who uses your premises, who disturbs asbestos that has deteriorated or been damaged and releases fibres, can be at risk. In fact, anyone whose work involves drilling, sawing or cutting into the fabric of premises could potentially be at risk. They may breathe in asbestos fibres during their day-to-day work.

SMSTS Training
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme training course is one of the most highly respected qualifications within the construction industry.  Many employers insist that every Site Manager hold this qualification.  The training course helps site managers develop knowledge, understanding and awareness of their role in relation to their legal, social and moral responsibilities and how to manage health and safety on site in accordance with legislation.
The SMSTS scheme helps site managers and supervisors to:

  • Demonstrate their skills to contractors and clients.
  • Run a safer and more efficient site.
  • Identify and avoid potential hazards on site.
  • Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other statutory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Duration
SMSTS is a five day course that can be taken on a 1 day a week attendance or as a 5 day block attendance. It trains each individual in the essential points of Health and Safety and shows them how to measure Health and Safety performance on their own site. The interactive method of delivery of the course allows for discussion of the subject areas together with the development of risk assessments, methods statements and health and safety plans for construction activities. At the end of the course, each individual has to pass a multiple choice test which qualifies them for the Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate.

Working at Heights Course
The Work at Height Regulation 2005 came into effect in April 2005.  The regulations applies to all work at height where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury.  In 2006/2007, falls from height accounted for 45 fatal incidents and nearly 4000 major injuries. They remain the biggest cause of workplace deaths and one of the main causes of injury.
They place duties on employers , the self employed, and any person that controls the work of others. (For example facilities managers or building owners who may contract others to work at heights).

Objectives
By actively participating in the course delegates will have gained knowledge and understanding of how to work competently at height, including the organisation, planning, supervision and how to minimise risks and identify hazards to others around them.

First Aid
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are taken ill or injured at work.

These regulations apply to all businesses regardless of how many employees you have or even if you are self employed.

What is adequate will depend on the circumstances of the business and workplace.
Employers should carry out an assessment of the workplace to ascertain what first aid needs/training is essential to your business.

We recommend two first aid courses. Obviously it will depend on your business requirements which one meets your first aid needs.

Manual Handling
At some time or other we are all guilty of lifting and carrying heavy and obstructive items incorrectly. But how many of us do actually know the correct procedure to avoid work related injuries such as musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s).

OJ Safety runs half day courses regularly.  The course is ideal for employees whose activities include manual handling of loads, this course demonstrates the adverse effects of poor manual handling.  It also highlights the benefits of applying good techniques and principles when carrying out manual handling tasks.
